Clinical evidence and product guide
A closer look at reactive air, the research
and the support that fits everyday care.
A clearer starting point
Good pressure care starts
with understanding.
When someone spends much of the day in bed or in a chair, choosing pressure-care equipment can feel complicated. Repose is a range of reactive-air support surfaces from Frontier Medical Group, designed to redistribute pressure as part of an individual care plan.
Prodromou Medical is the Repose distributor in Cyprus. Here, we explain what the range does, what published research tells us, and which products you can discuss with our team.
01 / How it works
Air is the medium.
The person is the focus.
Repose includes mattress overlays, seating supports and heel-offloading devices. Its air-filled surfaces and flexible material work through two principles: immersion, where the body settles into the surface, and envelopment, where the surface conforms around the body. This helps distribute the load over a larger contact area. Frontier’s instructions for use
The reactive-air products featured here are inflated with a manual pump. They do not use an electrically powered cycle that repeatedly inflates and deflates different sections. The pump’s Smart Valve controls inflation pressure; follow the instructions supplied with the exact product. Frontier’s Repose technology guide
A support surface is one part of prevention. The International Guideline says people at risk still need an individual repositioning plan, whatever pressure-redistributing surface they use. Equipment cannot replace regular changes of position. International Guideline: repositioning, 2026
02 / Clinical evidence
Evidence deserves
a closer look.
Different studies answer different questions.
Here is what matters when you read the numbers.
308 people.
26 nursing homes.
14 days.
Beeckman and colleagues studied 308 high-risk older residents in 26 Belgian nursing homes over 14 days. New category II–IV pressure ulcers developed in 8 of 154 people (5.2%) in the Repose-based static-air group, compared with 18 of 154 (11.7%) receiving alternating-air support. The reported difference was statistically significant, with p = 0.04.

Category II–IV during the 14-day study
The intervention combined a mattress overlay with heel support; most participants also used a Repose cushion. This was evidence for a package of care, not an isolated test of every Repose product. Follow-up was short, participants and ward nurses were unblinded, and the comparison equipment varied.
The investigators received a grant from Frontier Therapeutics. They reported that the funder had no role in the study’s design, analysis or reporting. Beeckman et al., International Journal of Nursing Studies, 2019 — original paper
How does that fit with the wider research?
Cochrane’s 2021 review found that reactive-air surfaces may reduce pressure-ulcer risk compared with foam surfaces. However, evidence for several comparisons was uncertain, and the wider review could not establish a dependable ranking of all support-surface types. This research covers a class of products; it does not endorse every Repose model. Cochrane: reactive-air surfaces, Cochrane: overview of support surfaces
The International Guideline’s current recommendations also support pressure-redistributing foam as a first full-body support option for people at risk. Choosing an air system therefore calls for individual assessment, rather than assuming that air is always better than foam. International Guideline: full-body support surfaces, updated August 2026
What about the Repose Cushion itself?
A manufacturer-authored pressure-mapping poster compared three cushions in ten healthy participants, seated for ten minutes per cushion. Repose recorded the lowest peak pressure and the most even pressure distribution among those tested. This supports its pressure-redistribution mechanism, but the small, short test did not measure pressure-ulcer prevention or healing. Webber, Frontier Medical Group: original pressure-mapping poster
The practical message is encouraging but specific: there is a clinical reason to consider Repose, while the right product still depends on the person, their existing equipment and their care needs.

Repose / In bedIn bed
Repose Mattress Overlay
The overlay sits on an existing mattress and provides a reactive-air support surface. Its compact, deflatable format can be useful when discussing pressure-care equipment for a home or care setting.
Before choosing
confirm the underlying mattress, bed fit, any side rails and the user’s weight. The stated maximum is 222 kg on a high-specification foam mattress, or 139 kg on other foam mattresses. The higher limit must not be applied without its mattress condition. Frontier: Repose Mattress Overlay
Repose / While seatedWhile seated
Repose Cushion
The Repose Cushion offers a portable, air-filled seating surface. The standard version measures 45 × 45 cm and has a stated maximum user weight of 139 kg. Frontier: Repose Cushion
Before choosing
check seat fit and the effect on sitting height, foot support and transfers. The manufacturer requires chairs with armrests. Confirm the cover and pump supplied with your selected configuration; the photograph shows a separate cover as well as the cushion. Frontier’s instructions for use
Repose / Seat and backSeat and back
Repose Care-Sit
Care-Sit combines separate seat and back sections within one support. It is designed for static chairs and general-purpose wheelchairs, with an adjustable securing system on its cover. Frontier: Repose Care-Sit
Before choosing
confirm the size, covered configuration and fit on a chair with armrests. It is not a substitute for specialist postural management. People with significant postural needs require an appropriate seating assessment. Frontier’s instructions for use
Repose / At the heelsAt the heels
Repose Foot Protector Plus
Foot Protector Plus is designed to lift pressure away from the heel and distribute it along the calf. Its adjustable fastening and inspection panel support fitting and observation. Frontier: Repose Foot Protector Plus
Before choosing
the lower leg must fit correctly. This model contains magnets: the instructions require at least 15 cm separation from active devices such as pacemakers. Discuss suitability with the healthcare team where this applies. Frontier’s instructions for use
Product photographs show example configurations. Selection depends on individual assessment, exact fit and the manufacturer’s instructions.
04 / Put care first
The product is part
of the care plan.
Think beyond one surface.
Consider the person’s whole day.
Start with where the person spends time, how independently they move, their skin condition and the equipment already in place. A cushion used during the day and an overlay used at night address different parts of that routine.
Ask the healthcare professional responsible for care to establish an appropriate repositioning and skin-check plan. Check the chosen support regularly, use the specified pump and follow its fitting and maintenance instructions. If the skin deteriorates, seek professional advice promptly. International Guideline: repositioning, Frontier’s instructions for use
If wheelchair fit is also part of the decision, read our guide to choosing a wheelchair for your home in Cyprus. Pressure care and practical access should be considered together.
Before you choose
A few good
questions.
Does Repose need electricity?
The reactive-air overlay, cushion, Care-Sit and Foot Protector Plus discussed here use a manual inflation pump. They still need the regular checks and inflation maintenance specified by Frontier.
Can I choose it for someone who already has a pressure ulcer?
Ask the treating healthcare professional to select the appropriate support as part of the care plan. Evidence about preventing new pressure ulcers is not automatically evidence that a particular product will heal an existing wound.
